CHARACTER INFO

Character: Azul Ashengrotto
Canon: Twisted Wonderland | Post Book 6
Age: 17

Background Information:

Azul Ashengrotto is an octo-merman from the Coral Sea, an ocean that is cold and dark for most of the year. Despite having a loving and successful mother and stepfather raising him, Azul's childhood was spent in isolation, due to the bullying of other children who would torment him for his appearance: despite the wild variety of different sea life and types of mermaids in the sea, being an "octomer" was considered too strange for the other children, frequently tormenting him for being too slow, or too weird because of his octopus ink, or for being too much of a crybaby. However, Azul had a great talent for magic that quickly surpassed that of other children, and upon the development of his signature spell "It's A Deal", he was able to quickly amass several achievements and skills under his belt thanks to the trades and contracts he made while at the same time quietly getting back at the peers who had once tormented him with those same contracts, at least for the ones who were foolish enough to make deals with him.

This would soon attract the attention of Jade and Floyd Leech, two eel twins that were fellow classmates that took interest in his activities and found him fascinating rather than being someone to fear or torment. The three of them as a result became thick as thieves, under the promise that Azul would continue to be "interesting" to the twins, and in exchange they would be willing to work under him and do anything he asked of them in order to further his ambitions. Soon enough, Azul quickly set his sights on the world above the sea, wanting to go on land and prove himself and his talents in a place where no one would know of his past, and could even further change his image away from the "ugly" octomer he saw himself as. As such, he convinced Jade and Floyd to join him, and went on to learning everything they could about how to live on land among humans and all the other individuals beyond the sea.

From there, Azul has since become a sophomore at Night Raven College, and current housewarden of Octavinelle, the dorm dedicated to learning and displaying the traits that best exemplifies the "benevolence" of the Sea Witch, one of the Great Seven Mages of the world. He also runs his own cafe on campus known as the Mostro Lounge, a popular place for students to mingle and enjoy the food and drinks on offer. Not only that, but rumors begin to quickly spread around the school about him being able to grant any wish, in exchange for a person's most prided quality. However, in reality, his deals only truly benefit himself, often leaving the person on the receiving end with nothing to show for it, and with the help of Jade and Floyd as his enforcers, so to speak, those who try to fight back against him often pay the price for it.

This behavior eventually comes to a head when, during exam season, Azul comes up with a plan involving allowing tons of students to make contracts with him: in exchange for the perfect study guide that could be used to get high scores on the exams, the student would give up "one personal specialty", which would be returned if they scored high enough to get into the top 50 highest achievers list. However, anyone who did not make it into the top 50 would be considered having conducted a "breach of contract", and forced into servitude to work for Azul for as long as he wished and him keeping whatever item or magic ability that was given in exchange for the study guide. At the same time, Azul schemes to get his hands on the "Ramshackle Dorm" that the school's prefect Yuu and Grim were living in, and thus forces them into a contract that they make to try to get him to release their friends that are under his servitude by claiming that he will do so, but only if Yuu brings him an item of importance to him. The item in question turns out to be a photo from a famous museum in the Coral Sea, and if the item is not acquired and given to him under a deadline, then not only will Yuu's friends be forced to keep working for Azul, but Azul will take Yuu's dorm away from them too.

As a result, Yuu ends up scrambling all over the place trying to retrieve the photo, no thanks to the Leech twins that Azul sends to try to get in their way. Eventually Yuu ends up recruiting Leona in Savanaclaw to help deal with Azul as well as attempt to destroy the contracts in Azul's possession, which miraculously seems to work when Leona manages to get ahold of them and use his signature spell to dissolve into sand. Unfortunately, this causes Azul to completely lose it, unwilling to accept having all of the contracts and powers that he had amassed be taken away from him, deeply afraid that without them, he will go back to being seen as the weak crybaby he had been tormented as during his childhood. He quickly attempts to forcibly steal everyone's magic from them, which results in Azul's Overblot threatening to destroy both himself and others from the overuse of his magic, forcing Leona, Yuu and friends, and even Jade and Floyd having to fight him and make him come back to his senses, which thankfully works.

From here, Azul goes on to try to change his ways at least a little by not making deals that are quite as full of trickery, and even helping out Yuu when they end up in a tight situation involving Jamil and the Scarabia dorm. However, due to how many overblot incidents have happened in the school, including Azul's, this draws the attention of S.T.Y.X (a research organization who studies Blot), getting essentially kidnapped by them along with the other students who had Overblotted and being tested to figure out how it happened in the first place. Azul manages to break free though alongside the other captured students and go after Idia, a fellow housewarden that is a part of S.T.Y.X. who ironically ends up overblotting as well, and needs to be stopped. Thankfully, they succeeded and transported back to Night Raven College soon after.

Personality:

Typically one's first impression when it comes to meeting Azul is that he is the friendly sort, frequently offering to help out those in need in any way big or small. And why wouldn't someone be willing to accept his help? He is after all very skilled when it comes to his studies, his magical abilities, and even his business sense as someone running his own restaurant at such a young age, and thus comes across for most people as very intelligent as a result. He always seems to know just how to say the right thing in order to entice people into looking to him as a source of help or as a role model for the students of his dorm to look up to, eager to be seen as a benevolent individual just as great as the Sea Witch that he and other Octavinelle students admire.

However, being friendly and helpful is not the same thing as being "kind" in his eyes, and Azul believes there is no such thing as the word "free" in his book. As such, he insists on making deals and exchanges rather than simply helping others out solely out of the goodness of one's heart in order to keep things fair and equivalent. Or at least, that's what he tells people, but often in reality the deals he makes are made under whatever circumstances Azul believes is the most advantageous to himself more so than another individual. He tries to be very careful and precise in arranging words so that a deal may seem to be exactly what someone desires, and being tempting enough to convince someone to agree, but often those words were arranged to have 'grey areas' that allow him to potentially scam a person out of a fair deal if desired.

Especially when it comes to money: Azul is very fond of currency, even to the point of collecting coins like the ones he used to go scavenging for in his childhood. A lot of his business ventures are done under the goal of making as much money as possible in order to benefit himself and his business the Mostro Lounge, and he will attempt to avoid anything that could potentially be too costly, from trying to avoid fights that could result in a lawsuit, or even outright claiming that the only reason he was fighting to prevent a catastrophe happening to the world was because allowing it to happen would "ruin the economy" of all things.

This kind of greediness also bleeds over into other areas, such as his contracts he once made in order to take other's powers and skills for himself. He wants to be seen as a powerful mage to be respected, although a lot of this stems from the truth that in reality, Azul is very insecure about himself despite his confidence and schemes. He has a crippling fear of people seeing his "true" self, both literally and metaphorically. For the former, this is in regards to his octomer form that he despises the appearance of, thanks to being bullied and isolated over by other mermaids in his youth, something that carries over even in the human form that he prefers to be in as he tries to avoid foods that he believes will make him look chubby like his octopus form used to be, or in how much he despises taking part in gym and flight classes due to how sluggish he is when trying to run or use tools like brooms to lift off the ground. And then there's his personality, where he worries that if he's not being seen and treated as all powerful or amazing, then he will somehow end up being bullied and isolated again, so he avoids letting most get close enough to him to see him in any circumstances that he believes makes him look pathetic. Which, is certainly easier said than done, as deep down at heart he is actually pretty sensitive, enough that he even cries and throws fits when truly angry or upset, but tries to avoid any situation where that might happen at all costs since it would ruin his perfect image otherwise.

Though, that said, Azul has been attempting to make some changes following his overblot incident. Azul still has insecurities about his past and how they might affect his current image in the present, but wants to someday accept who he used to be all the same. In addition, he stopped tricking his customers as frequently as he did before: it's still important to be wary when making deals with Azul sometimes, but he is at least capable of being more amendable to a deal so that he isn't potentially regarded as being just flat-out evil. Especially since he's come to find that he hates the idea of "owing" someone if they do something for him and he doesn't properly repay the favor in return in a satisfactory manner.

He's also fascinated by the world outside of the sea: life in the Coral Sea can be cold and ruthless due to how merfolk need to be able to survive under it's conditions, including feeding off of other sea life, but learning about humans or life in general on the surface has been one of his few interests not necessarily motivated by his capitalist nature. As such, he likes listening to people talk about their opinions on something as simple as pillows or beds since that isn't something that they have in the ocean, as well as becoming enthusiastic about playing cards or other games since having joined the Board Game club with Idia, and can thus be persuaded to take part in a game of some kind if asked... as long as it's not a physical one, anyway.

Abilities & Inventory: Like the rest of his fellow mages at Night Raven College, Azul can cast magic spells, ranging from offensive elemental spells, flight, summoning objects, creating temporary barriers, etc. Most importantly however is his signature spell that he has developed, called "It's A Deal": the spell takes the form of a golden scroll that outlines a contract that must be followed between Azul and the other receiver. In exchange for Azul granting a "wish" or favor of the recipient's choosing (provided it is something that Azul is in fact actually capable of doing--he would not be able to say, magically teleport someone back home from here obviously) the other person gives up something of theirs in exchange either temporarily or permanently, which can be anything small from money to their own magic. If a person does not follow through on their end of the deal, then either they are bound to work under him, or the person must trade one of their abilities or traits upon signing the scroll, and Azul will be able to use said ability as his own until the terms of the contract is concluded or the contract itself is destroyed. This can be either a person's magical ability, or even a physical one, such as being able to sing, swimming fast, or even the knowledge of how to speak beast language. Sometimes this can also be used to borrow a physical trait like a person's voice temporarily.

Azul is actually able to take a target's powers or abilities directly without using his contracts if so desired, through a... less than pleasant method of literally tearing it out of a person by force. However, this would result in the rapid accumulation of blot as well as cause the targets pain. The contract works as a check to prevent overexertion of his magical powers, so it's basically a self-imposed limiter he came up with himself as his signature spell. Because of this, he also has to make sure he doesn't overuse his magic in general even with regular spells, or else he will accumulate blot that will make him sick as well. Naturally, we will not be having him bypass his contract spell and outright attempting to steal someone's powers without getting player permission or saving it for a future plot in game.

Lastly, Azul is an octomer: his true form is that of a mermaid with octopus features. As such, he is able to swim farther/faster, breathe underwater, enhanced grip-strength, and has the use of his tentacles to grab and lift objects. He despises his octomer form, however, due to his insecurities regarding his appearance, so he will try to avoid being seen in this state very often depending on whether or not he can gain regular access to potions/items that let him maintain his human form.

Items: Smartphone, Magic Pen (can also be turned into a staff)

ARMADA SELECTION

Azul could honestly fit in either, but is more likely to want to start off on the Paladins side of thing if he was given a choice in the matter. As someone who cares about his image (especially as someone who wants to grease palms and make deals that will allow him to climb up the ladder and quickly amass his own crew and ship), this would be the best fit for him. That said, even if he speaks of benevolence and helping "poor unfortunate souls", he's still a villain at heart deep down that cannot help looking for solutions that benefit him the most over others. Due to his capitalist nature, Azul could potentially end up being seen as a corrupt individual within the group, which could be fun to play with.
